Adjust-A-Desk

Allow for both individual and group collaboration between students and teachers

After interviewing teachers in Boulder, Colorado, one of the main points of feedback I received was teachers always lacking desk space and not having a good space for reading groups to meet without having to move all their stuff for reading groups around the classroom. Adjust-A-Desk allows for student desks to nest under each other so space can be saved when necessary and collaboration can be encouraged.

First prototype

This prototype showed me I needed to try and increase collaboration between students and teachers in a more effective way along with making a more human centered design when it came to the center storage component. This current design had a very oddly shaped storage design and didn’t provide the eacher with many places for additional or private storage.

  • Adjust-A-Desk creates space for storage in the legs of the teacher’s desk which also make the entire artifact sturdy due to the 18” bases.

  • Combining the teachers desk and reading desk for students eliminates the need for the teacher to move things back and forth

  • Nesting the desks under each other and allowing for multiple positions to be possible allows for a vast amount of options regarding one on one teaching and teaching in groups.

  • Having the large legs under the students desks might seem bulky but feedback I got suggested this was the best move because kids like to have somewhere to put their feet while sitting. This provides something for them to “play with”.
